The Old Tom Morris Course was designed by old Tom Morris of St. Andrews in 1893 and later modified by James Braid and Harry Vardon to make it into a championship links golf course. As with most good links courses, the Old course takes advantage of natural terrain to provide a classic links golf challenge. The front nine play inland and around the coastguard hill and offer superb vistas over Mulroy Bay. The back nine holes which are classic links run between the ocean and the high dune ridge in what is known locally as "The Valley" finishing in front of the Golf Pavilion.
